Robertson Scientific Research & Consulting

Services

Robertson Scientific Research & Consulting (RSR Consulting) is a business addressing problems in optics, acoustics, sensors, signal processing, and computational science. The services provided are built on the 40 years of applied reseach experience in National labs, industry, and academia of William Robertson, Ph.D. Robertson Scientific Consulting offers a wide range of science expertise areas, including:

  • Metamaterials
  • Acoustics
  • Computational and data Science
  • Signal processing
  • Scientific writing and communication
  • Undergraduate Research

If you need assistance with a science, engineering, or academic program development project in any of these or related areas, please contact me to discuss at no cost or obligation. If I have the right skills for your issue, I will craft a proposal outlining the sevice I can offer. If the problem is not one in an area I feel comfortable, I may be able to direct you to someone who can.

About RSR Consulting

RSR Consulting offers a scientific approach to solving problems using the expertise and 40 years research experience of William Robertson. My background and training is in solid state physics, optics, acoustics, and computational science as detailed in my resume.. Over my career I have applied my skills to a wide variety of problems from helping businesses assess and develop products, providing environmental groups with engineering studies, to the development of curricula for undergraduate and gradute courses and programs. A signature part of my career has been an emphasis on undergraduate research. I have published refereed journal articles with 30 undergraduate co-authors and helped secure National Science Foundation funding for undergraduate research programs. The application of computational techniques using python, MATLAB, and COMSOL are a strong feature of my approach to problem solving. I helped develop, and was interim director for, the computational science Ph.D. program at Middle Tennessee State University.

Patent Portfolio

I own the rights to seven of my patents that are currently available to license. The patents are in two areas. The first 5, described in the biosensor link below, concern the use of optical Bloch Surface waves for biological or chemical sensing and for a number of photonic circuit applications. The last two patents concern the design of an acoustic lens based on an array of detuned Helmholtz resonators. A description of these patents and ther relation to the burgeoning field of meta-materials is on my to-do list. Like any patent holder I am looking for a party interested in licensing these intellectual property assests. I believe that the optical sensing technology based on Bloch surface waves (BSWs) offers a strong candidate for a commercial product. To learn more about BSWs and their application for sensing and particularly if you are a company involded in optical sensing please follow the link to Bloch Surface Wave (BSW) Biosensor: Introduction and Business Case.

Previous Project Examples

The links below take you to a description of projects I have completed in the past. Some are deliberately vague on details either because the project was conducted under a non-disclosure agreement or the source material contained Critical Infrastructure Information.
